Keyword Targeted Traffic: Visits That Start With a Search

Traffic targeted by keyword has to come from a results page: a browser searches the query, finds your listing and clicks it. SERP Clicks does that with a real browser for the keywords you choose, on Google, Bing or Yandex, in the country you set. Other traffic can be sent to a page, but it does not arrive from a keyword.

The clicks come from automated browsers, not from buyers, and they do not guarantee a change in rankings.

What Keyword Targeting Means

A visit with a query behind it

A visit is keyword targeted when it begins with a search for that keyword. Direct, referral and social visits have no query behind them, whatever page they land on, so an offer of keyword traffic without a search sends something else.

That is why the tool here is SERP Clicks and not Traffic Generator: only SERP Clicks runs the search and clicks your listing in the results.

Keywords the page already ranks for

The browser has to find the listing to click it, and it never clicks ads, so only queries the page already appears for can be used. Search Console lists them under Performance, with impressions and the average position for each.

Choose a few queries per page with steady impressions, and keep a note of their clicks, impressions and position before you start.

How the visits are reported

In Google Analytics a click arrives as an organic search session from the engine you chose, on the page that was clicked. GA4 does not show the search term of organic visits: the query level exists only in Search Console.

Whether and how these clicks are reflected in Search Console is decided by Google and is not guaranteed, so compare the queries with your baseline rather than with the dashboard.

Example: Three Long-Tail Queries for One Page

A guide page ranks on the second results page for three long-tail queries, each with a few hundred impressions a month in Search Console. The campaign stays well inside those impressions and runs for a month.

Campaign settings
TargetThe guide's URL, exact page only
Keywords3 queries the page already ranks for
Clicks3 clicks per keyword per day, for 30 days

CountryThe country whose results the page ranks in
HoursDaytime hours in that country's timezone
After the click2 pages, about a minute on each

What to read afterwards

  • The SERP Clicks dashboard: clicks delivered per keyword, and the position the listing was found at on each day
  • GA4, Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition: organic search sessions from Google on the guide page
  • Search Console, Performance: clicks, impressions, CTR and position for the three queries, set against the note you took before the start

Cost: 3 keywords at 3 clicks a day for 30 days is 270 clicks at $0.09, so $24.30 at most. A click is charged only when the listing is found and clicked, so a day the page is not found costs nothing.

Setting Up a Keyword Campaign

  1. 01

    Choose the queries

In Search Console, open Performance, filter by the page, and pick a few queries where it already appears with steady impressions.

  2. 02

    Record the baseline

Write down clicks, impressions, CTR and average position per query for the last four weeks.

  3. 03

    Keep clicks inside impressions

Set clicks per keyword per day well below the query's daily impressions. A query seen about ten times a day does not become believable with ten clicks a day.

  4. 04

    Compare after a month

Set the same four-week window after the campaign against the baseline, query by query, and decide whether to continue, adjust or stop.

What Keyword-Targeted Clicks Do and Do Not Do

What it does

  • Start every visit with a real search for the keyword you set, on Google, Bing or Yandex
  • Click your listing only where it already appears in the organic results, and charge only then
  • Bring the visit to the page as organic search traffic in your analytics, with the page depth and time you set

What it does not do

  • Do not move a listing to a chosen place in the results: they find it where it already is
  • Do not turn direct, referral or social visits into keyword traffic: those have no query
  • Do not guarantee rankings or control what Search Console reports

Acceptable use, data handling and the limits that apply to every tool are in the Trust Center

Tool Used in This Example
